Mexican-American flutist and soprano Beatriz Macias is one of the most intriguing and versatile international virtuosos in classical music.
Macias began her career as a professional flutist and has collaborated with some of the world's most respected orchestras. She has for example served as the principal flutist of the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra and was recognized as a Yamaha Young Performing Artist.
It could also be said that Beatriz Macias' career as a flutist connected her with the world of opera. Macias has performed with numerous European and American symphony and chamber orchestras. Examples of these include the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Opera House 'La Monnaie', the Flemish Opera House, the Noord Nederlands Orkest, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, the Qatar Philharmonic, Opera national de Lorraine, and the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
The embassies of Mexico, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, and Finland have invited Macias to perform in their Without Borders concert series.
One of Macias' most requested repertoires is Zarzuela. Macias' Latin background beautifully complements the passion and drama of Zarzuela: "Onstage, Macias is in her element, and thanks to her, the entire art form comes to life with every note and gesture.
Zarzuela refers to Spanish lyrical opera, and its name originates from the Spanish word "Zarza," which means blackberry. This music style originated in the 17th century at the Spanish royal residence (Palacio de la Zarzuela), where blackberries grew in the courtyard. By the 19th century, Zarzuela had reached its peak of popularity, propelled by many famous works from the best composers in the field, such as Ruperto Chapí and Tomás Bretón.
