Jukka Haavisto – Löyly Syndicate is a new international ensemble led by Finnish bassist and composer Jukka Haavisto, one of the most distinctive Nordic voices in contemporary jazz fusion. The project weaves together Finno-Ugric melodic heritage, Nordic jazz atmospheres, and the electric energy of modern fusion, creating a sound world that feels both ancient and forward-looking.
The name löyly—the rising steam and vital spirit of the Finnish sauna—captures the essence of the music: transformation, intensity, and the deep, breathing warmth of northern culture. Löyly Syndicate’s music unfolds like a ritual, where rhythm, melody, and improvisation interact in constantly evolving forms.
At the core of the ensemble’s sound is Haavisto’s highly personal approach to the fretless electric bass, where melody, harmony, and rhythm merge into a single expressive voice. Known for his harmonics-based phrasing, singing tone, and narrative compositional style, Haavisto continues the lineage of electric jazz innovators while grounding his music firmly in Nordic identity.
The quartet brings together some of the strongest voices of the Finnish jazz scene.
Anssi Tirkkonen (drums) contributes precision, deep groove, and dynamic sensitivity shaped by a broad background in contemporary jazz and improvisation.
Ville-Veikko Airaniemi (guitar) moves effortlessly between jazz, rock, pop, and world music influences, adding color, texture, and atmospheric depth.
Vili Itäpelto (keyboards) provides the harmonic and spatial architecture of the group, blending lyrical Nordic harmony with modern jazz vocabulary and electronic textures.
Together, the ensemble forms a modern northern fusion band defined by strong interplay, wide dynamic range, evolving textures, and fearless improvisation.
Löyly Syndicate’s new album Juniper Path, to be released internationally in October 2026, marks a major new chapter in Haavisto’s artistic journey. The album draws inspiration from Finno-Ugric melodic tradition, Nordic landscapes and poetic stillness, American jazz fusion harmony, and Haavisto’s unique bass-driven compositional language. Supported by a major grant from the Alfred Kordelin Foundation, Juniper Path launches the group’s international touring and long-term artistic development.
Known for electric bass-driven melodic storytelling, rhythmic complexity balanced with warmth and groove, cinematic Nordic textures, and improvisation that balances detail and freedom, Jukka Haavisto – Löyly Syndicate creates music that feels both intimate and expansive—what the group calls “Nordic fusion rituals.”
